Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812/15) Teil 2
The first edition of the Grimm brothers' legendary collection contains stories the world thought it knew, but in forms far rawer and more startling than the softened versions that followed. Here Rapunzel's secret pregnancy betrays her vulnerability, and Hansel and Gretel face abandonment by their own mother, not a stepwoman. These aren't the gentrified bedtime tales of later printings; they are folk narratives gathered from German storytellers in their original, sometimes brutal complexity. The 1812/15 edition also preserves tales with Huguenot roots, including 'Puss in Boots,' which the Grimms removed from subsequent editions entirely. This is where the familiar stories reveal their teeth. For two centuries, readers have known the Grimm fairy tale as something tidy and wholesome. This volume restores the darkness that made these stories survive centuries of oral transmission before the brothers wrote them down. It matters because it shows us what was deemed too rough for Victorian children, and what the Grimms themselves later decided to hide. For anyone who has ever sensed something lurking beneath the surface of童话, this is the unvarnished original.
