Key and Guide to Native Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of Dallas County

Originally published in 1939, this field guide captures the woody plant life of Dallas County, Texas, at a moment just before massive urbanization transformed the landscape forever. Norma Stillwell, a pioneering figure in Texas botany, crafted this identification key for beginners of all ages, focusing on roughly ninety native species of trees, shrubs, and woody vines. The guide teaches readers to identify plants through their most accessible features: leaves and twigs, using a clear classification system that distinguishes species by size and growth form. What gives this book its quiet power is its role as a botanical time capsule. Dallas County in 1939 still保留了 much of its native flora, and Stillwell's careful observations document a landscape that has largely vanished beneath highways and shopping centers. Whether you're a Texas naturalist, a history enthusiast, or a gardener curious about what grew on the land before it was paved over, this guide offers a way to reconnect with the region's ecological past.
