Kathleen in Ireland

The story opens on two sisters playing in the lush Irish countryside. Kathleen, bright and imaginative, fills their days with stories of leprechauns and fairy shoemakers, weaving the old myths into their simple life. Her younger sister Mary Ellen is blind, and Kathleen carries a quiet hope that magic might one day restore her sight. Their father is a shoemaker, and the fairy tale of the legendary cobbler who works for the fairies becomes a tender thread connecting Kathleen's love for her sister to her father's craft. McDonald writes with tenderness about the bond between sisters and the landscape that shaped generations of Irish imagination. Kathleen's journey through Dublin and the serene countryside reveals a world of tradition and warmth, where every encounter with folklore feels like an invitation into something larger than oneself. This is a book about the particular magic of childhood, the way stories can comfort and sustain us when we need them most.
