Katharine von Bora: Dr. Martin Luther's Wife

She escaped a convent. She married the most dangerous man in Europe. And then she built something extraordinary. Katharine von Bora was nineteen when she fled a Nuremberg convent, one of dozens of nuns who found freedom in Luther's protest against Rome. When the reformer himself proposed marriage, she reportedly laughed: she had expected something more than a gaunt, ex-monk with bad digestion. Yet she said yes, and in doing so became the unlikely anchor of the Protestant revolution. This fictionalized biography traces her transformation from runaway nun to the undisputed mistress of the Wittenberg household, where she managed a farm, a brewery, and the constant stream of students, refugees, and reformers who passed through their door. Stein renders her not as Luther's shadow but as his equal, a woman whose practical wisdom and steady nerve steadied a man prone to despair and debate. For readers drawn to the Reformation's human story, this is a portrait of partnership, faith, and the quiet power of domestic virtue in times of upheaval.
