Junior Park Ranger Program: Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments

Step into the shoes of a real archaeologist. This official National Park Service activity booklet turns young visitors into Junior Park Rangers, sending them on a hands-on exploration of two of Arizona's most fascinating ancient sites: Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. Children decode the mysteries of the Sinagua people, the ancestors who built these remarkable cliff dwellings and villages over 1,000 years ago. They match shard patterns from ancient pottery, identify wildlife that still roams the Sonoran Desert, navigate mazes through reconstructed ruins, and uncover what life was like for a civilization that vanished into history. The booklet weaves together puzzle-solving with real historical knowledge, asking curious questions: Why did the Sinagua leave? How did they use desert plants for food, medicine, and clothing? What can a broken pottery sherd tell us about who lived here? Designed for multiple age groups and supported by the Western National Parks Association, the program rewards completion with an official badge signed by a real Park Ranger. More than a souvenir, it plants a seed of stewardship, teaching kids that they are guardians of something precious.
