Jugurtha

This is ancient Rome at its most brutal and most corrupt. Sallust, who abandoned politics for history after his own career was tarnished by scandal, wrote this account to expose the rot at the heart of the Republic. The narrative centers on Jugurtha, a Numidian prince raised in Rome's own court, who seizes power through murder and civil war after his adoptive father dies. Rome's response, supposedly to punish his crimes, becomes a spectacle of incompetence and bribery, as Jugurtha buys his way past Roman senators like commodities at auction. Only when the rough general Gaius Marius takes command does Rome prevail, and even then, victory comes through endurance rather than virtue. The book culminates in Jugurtha's capture and execution in the Tullianum prison, his triumphal parade through Rome reduced to a strangler's hands in the dark. Sallust's masterpiece endures because it strips away the myth of Roman virtue: here is a civilization that conquered through money and luck as much as courage, a warning about power that still resonates.
