Journal comprised of two non-whaling voyages. First voyage documents the Mary Ann (Brig) of New Bedford, Mass., mastered by Abraham Swain, kept by Joshua Hitch, from 20 July 1830 - 19 November 1830, a shipping voyage from Hampton Roads (Virginia) towards Rio de Janeiro and the Rio Grande do Sul region in Brazill. An early attempt to sell cargo (flour) was unsuccessful so the ship headed for Santa Cruz (Brazil) then Saint Catherine (Brazil). The captain found an error in "Blount's new chart" on September 29, 1830. The crew hunted "black headed swans (ostriches) in November 1830 while at Brazil. Second voyage documents the Mary Ann (Brig) of New Bedford, mastered by Abraham Swain, from 25 February 1831 - 22 April 1831, a merchant voyage from Rio Grande to New York. Includes notes on navigation. The cargo consisted of flour. As the ship left Rio Grande, there were 17 other ships leaving, 4 of them American. During the voyage, the crew laid the deck with turpentine and oil and painted the ship.
