This is not your grandfather's war memoir. In 1819, an anonymous former soldier published what would become an indispensable window into the Napoleonic Wars, told through the eyes of a young man who never intended to be a soldier at all. The journal begins in Edinburgh, where our narrator, raised by impoverished but ambitious parents, dreams of theatrical glory. When a failed audition sends him fleeing into the arms of the 71st Regiment, he does not yet know that he has traded one stage for another far more deadly. Over nine years, he will ship to South America, train in Portugal, fight through the Peninsular War, and stand at Waterloo. But what elevates this above mere campaign chronology is its relentless interiority: the regret that poisons his letters home, the friendships forged in squalor, the identity he loses and rebuilds with each battle. This is military history from the ground up, where the great events of the age are refracted through one man's struggle simply to survive and understand what he has become.
