John Ronge; The Holy Coat of Treves; New German-Catholic Church

In 1840s Germany, a disillusioned Catholic priest named Johannes Ronge turns devastating critic of his own church. The subject: the Holy Coat of Treves, a relic supposedly worn by Christ that was put on public exhibition in Trier, drawing tens of thousands of desperate pilgrims seeking miracles. Ronge's treatise is both a meticulous expose of this devotional spectacle and a passionate argument against the institutional exploitation of faith. The text functions as a 19th-century work of religious polemic, combining forensic investigation with moral outrage. Ronge documents the economics of relic worship, the manipulation of the faithful, and the cynical calculations of clergy who transform spiritual yearning into financial gain. His critique predates modern secularization debates by a century, yet reads with startling contemporary relevance. Ronge would be excommunicated for this very text, an act that catalyzed the "German-Catholic" movement and helped spark wider religious reform in Europe. For readers interested in the hidden histories of religious skepticism, the emergence of liberal Catholicism, or the long tradition of insiders critiquing their own institutions, this is an essential primary document.
