Jesus, the Messiah; Or, The Old Testament Prophecies Fulfilled in the New Testament Scriptures, by a Lady

A remarkable document of early 19th-century evangelical scholarship, written by a woman when female theological authors were virtually nonexistent. The anonymous author traces the golden thread of Messianic prophecy through the Old Testament, showing how the virgin birth, the lineage of David, the suffering servant, and the triumphant King all converge in the person of Jesus Christ. Her approach is methodical yet accessible, designed to make Scripture familiar to young readers while offering deeper illumination for all who seek to understand how the promises of ancient prophets find their fulfillment in the Gospels. Beginning with Genesis 3:15 and the promise of enmity between the woman's seed and the serpent, she builds a compelling case that the entire arc of biblical narrative points toward one definitive moment: the coming of the Messiah. This is not dry theology but devotional detective work, the work of a faithful mind delighting in the coherence of God's redemptive story. For readers interested in historical biblical scholarship, the history of women's contributions to theology, or the particular way 19th-century Christians read their Bibles, this text offers a window into a vanished intellectual world where prophecy and its fulfillment were read as the central drama of human history.
