Jessie Carlton: The Story of a Girl Who Fought with Little Impulse, Thewizard, and Conquered Him

Set in the cozy world of Glen Morris Cottage, this mid-19th century children's novel introduces Jessie Carlton, a bright and imaginative girl whose greatest adversary isn't a villain or a monster but something far more relatable: her own wandering mind. Personified as the mischievous "wizard" called Impulse, Jessie's tendency to abandon her sewing projects and responsibilities for whimsical distractions becomes the heart of her coming-of-age journey. The novel captures the intimate drama of childhood moral struggle with surprising psychological nuance for its era, showing how Jessie's battles with procrastination and willfulness play out through her relationships with a loving uncle, her siblings, and her cousin Emily, whose own willful nature serves as both mirror and warning. Rather than a didactic lecture, Wise presents Jessie's internal conflict as a genuine fight, one she must learn to conquer through patience, honesty, and perseverance. The result is a window into how Victorian children's literature approached the universal challenge of growing up and learning to master oneself.
