Japanese Colour-Prints and Their Designers
1913
In the teahouses and theaters of Edo-period Japan, a revolutionary art form was born from the margins of polite society. This 1913 volume, originally a lecture delivered before the Japan Society of New York, traces the improbable rise of ukiyoé color prints from Moronobu's bold ink outlines in the 1670s through Harunobu's delicate full-color breakthroughs to Hiroshige's rain-soaked landscapes that would later haunt Van Gogh's imagination. Gookin illuminates how these images of actors, courtesans, and mountain vistas became a visual diary of the "floating world" (ukiyo), celebrated by merchants and craftsmen yet dismissed by samurai elites as vulgar commercialism. He details the extraordinary technical evolution from single-block impressions to elaborate multi-color prints requiring unprecedented collaboration between designer, carver, and printer. Nearly a century before Western museums would reclaim these works as masterpieces, Gookin understood their radical vision: art need not grandstand to endure, and beauty lives most fiercely in the transient moment.
