Jacquette, a Sorority Girl

In 1908, Grace Ethelwyn Cody captured something startlingly new: the feverish politics of being young and female in America. Jacquette Willard arrives in a bustling western city from quiet Brookdale, sent to live with relatives and begin high school. She is fair-haired, ambitious, and desperate to belong. When she learns of the Sigma Pi Epsilon sorority, she wants in more than anything. What follows is the ancient ritual of adolescent belonging: the friendships, the rivals, the quiet cruelties of who gets in and who gets left out. Through her cousin Marquis, Jacquette enters a world of school dances, secret alliances, and social hierarchies that feel as vicious as any workplace. Cody writes with a sharp eye for how status works among teenage girls, how a glance can wound, how the right crowd can make you and the wrong crowd can break you. The sorority becomes a prism for everything Jacquette wants and fears. For readers curious about how American youth culture invented itself, this is a fascinating artifact, a window into the anxieties and aspirations of a generation trying to grow up fast.
