Jack's Two Sovereigns

In a cramped little house in Victorian England, a printer's boy named Jack Kayll holds something precious: two whole sovereigns, enough to change everything for his struggling family. Or is it? This is the question that animates A.S. Fenn's tender, unsentimental portrait of working-class life, where every shilling counts and moral choices come wrapped in impossible circumstances. The Kaylls are poor - genuinely, grindingly poor. Jack earns five shillings a week. His siblings chip in what they can. There's not enough for luxuries, not enough for comfort, sometimes not quite enough for food. But there's always enough for love, even when the children bicker and the parents worry and the weight of poverty presses down on every small decision. Jack must decide what to do with his two sovereigns, and in doing so, discover what it truly means to be generous, to grow up, to choose between wants and needs. Fenn writes with clear eyes about hardship, but also with warmth that never slips into sentimentality. This is a book about the quiet heroism of ordinary people - working children, tired parents, families who stick together because they have no other choice and because they love each other very much.
