Irvin Cobb, His Book

In 1915, some of the biggest names in American letters gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria to celebrate Irvin S. Cobb, and what they left behind is a remarkable portrait of a writer in his moment. These aren't formal critical assessments but something rarer: tributes from friends who genuinely admired the man and his work. They write about Cobb's Kentucky roots, his start as a small-town newspaper reporter who became one of the most beloved humorists in America, and his surprising range - the same pen that made readers laugh could turn around and break their hearts. Reading these pages feels like eavesdropping on a room full of writers paying homage to one of their own, and in doing so, they capture something about early 20th-century American literary culture that no textbook quite replicates. The affection is real. The stories are vivid. And the whole thing has the warmth of old friends raising glasses late into the evening. For readers curious about the personalities behind the era's great magazines and newspapers, or anyone who appreciates literary friendship as its own delicate genre, this is a quiet gem.
