International Cartoons of the War

In 1916, as the Great War ground toward its bloodiest years, cartoonists across the globe picked up their pens as weapons. This collection gathers satirical illustrations from artists in Britain, France, Germany, Austria, America, and beyond, each rendering the conflict through national eyes. Here you'll find Kaiser Wilhelm drawn as a bloodthirsty tyrant, French soldiers depicted as noble defenders, British Tommies stoically enduring bombardment, and enemy nations transformed into beasts, fools, and monsters. But the cartoons also reveal darker truths: the racial caricatures, the dehumanizing propaganda, the way humor became a valve for releasing the impossible pressures of total war. These images moved through newspapers and pamphlets, shaping how ordinary people understood a conflict that had never before touched so many lives so directly. The book captures a moment when the world was still capable of laughing at its own destruction, before the slaughter at the Somme and Verdun rendered such levity obscene.
