Ingoldsby Legends, 1st Series

Richard Harris Barham

The Ingoldsby Legends, first published in 1837, is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories, and poetry attributed to the fictional Thomas Ingoldsby, a pen name for Richard Harris Barham. Originally appearing in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine, these tales were illustrated by notable artists John Leech and George Cruikshank. The stories gained immense popularity during the Victorian era and were compiled into several volumes published between 1840 and 1847, although they have since faded from prominence.
