Index to Kindergarten Songs Including Singing Games and Folk Songs

Before playlists and streaming, there were singing games passed from teacher to teacher, folk songs learned in schoolrooms across America, and a whole musical world that shaped childhood for generations. This index, compiled in the early 20th century for kindergarten educators in St. Louis, is a road map to that vanished world. Margery Closey Quigley organized thousands of songs, games, and folk melodies at the request of teachers who needed a reliable way to find the right song for the right moment in the classroom. The result is a meticulous reference work that reveals what American children were actually singing in the years around World War I: the precise melodies, the games that accompanied them, the collections where they were preserved. For anyone curious about the musical DNA of American childhood, or for teachers and historians reconstructing early education, this index is both a practical tool and a fascinating artifact. It captures a moment when kindergarten was still a radical new idea, and music was considered essential to a child's development.
