Incidents of Childhood

This 1821 collection opens with a story that has lost none of its power: a lazy boy by the sea discovers a buried iron box and becomes convinced treasure lies within. What follows is a quiet metamorphosis. The boy, Peter Simons, begins to work not for the treasure anymore but for the satisfaction of labor itself. He earns money, buys tools, and transforms into someone his former self would not recognize. The box's contents become almost secondary to the transformation they sparked. These are moral tales for children, but they avoid the heavy-handedness that phrase usually implies. Instead, they offer snapshots of childhood itself: its small virtues, its common faults, and its capacity for change. The writing reflects an era when children were seen as souls worthy of respect rather than mere recipients of instruction. The stories feel intimate, conversational, as if a parent or governess is seated beside you, relating episodes from a neighborhood that might be anywhere or nowhere. The Peter Simons tale endures because it captures something universal: the way hope can remake a person, and how the journey toward something imagined often matters more than the destination itself.
