In the Saddle: A Collection of Poems on Horseback-Riding

A window into a vanished world, this anthology gathers poets who understood that riding was never merely about transportation. These are poems from the final decades of the horse-drawn age, when a rider's relationship with their mount was woven into the fabric of daily life. The verses capture something modern readers can only imagine: the particular silence of a horse at rest, the thunder of hooves across open ground, the trust between two creatures who must move as one or not at all. The collection ranges from celebratory and light-footed - poems that practically prance off the page - to contemplative and quietly devastating, exploring what it means to hand your safety over to another being. There is liberation here, yes, but also loss: these poets were writing at twilight of the equine era, and some of the wistfulness in these pages knows it. For anyone who has stood in a stable at dawn, or felt a horse breathe beneath them, or simply yearned for a slower world, this collection holds something true.
