In the Line of Battle: Soldiers' Stories of the War

These are the voices they didn't teach you about in school. Drawn from letters, diaries, and memoirs preserved across a century, this collection gathers the raw, unfiltered testimony of British soldiers who lived through the First World War. The book opens with Frederick William Owen Potts of the Berkshire Yeomanry, whose account of the Gallipoli Campaign drags the reader directly into the sand and chaos of that catastrophic shore landing. But this isn't heroism in the patriotic poster sense. It's the roar of shells and the weight of a dying friend. It's the gallows humor that kept men sane and the silence that followed when the laughing stopped. The accounts that follow expand outward from Gallipoli to the Western Front and beyond, each voice carrying its own weight of terror, boredom, brotherhood, and grief. What emerges is not a history lesson but something more human and more terrible: the actual experience of ordinary men thrust into extraordinary horror, told in their own words, unpolished and unforgettable.
