Ilvola: Eläinopillinen Runovalikoima

A poetry anthology compiled in the early 20th century. The collection brings together animal-themed poems from various Finnish writers, aimed primarily at children and young readers. Its likely focus is on introducing children to the natural world and various animals through vivid, rhythmic, and often playful poems that both entertain and educate. At the start of the anthology, the table of contents reveals a wide variety of animal poems, ranging from hens and hares to foxes, dogs, and songbirds, including well-known works by celebrated Finnish authors. The opening section, including the editors' preface, emphasizes the power of imagery and poetry in shaping a child's mind and the hope that the collection will bridge different educational subjects while awakening an early appreciation for rhythm and verse. The following poems immediately introduce lively dialogues and scenes among animals—roosters and hens discussing breakfast, squirrels lounging in their nests, and didactic verses on how to learn from animals' virtues and flaws. The tone is light, imaginative, and accessible, offering gentle lessons and everyday adventures in the animal kingdom.
