If You Don't Write Fiction

First published in the 1920s, this is the no-nonsense guide for writers who chose non-fiction over fiction. Charles Phelps Cushing, a working journalist who actually made his living from freelance articles, pulls no punches: this is a business before it is an art. He walks readers through the cold realities of the magazine market, what editors want, how to pitch them, and why timeliness matters more than talent if you want to get paid. But beneath the practical mechanics lies something rarer: a portrait of what it actually costs to be a writer. Rejection letters, empty pockets, the grinding work of turning ideas into sellable copy. Cushing's own anecdotes from the trenches make this more than a manual, it is a time capsule of early twentieth-century journalism, where a writer needed "a nose for news" and the stamina to keep querying after the twentieth no. For anyone curious about how non-fiction writers actually worked before the internet, or for writers today who want to understand the eternal economics of getting paid to write, this vintage guide remains surprisingly frank company.
