Icelandic Fairy Tales

What if the princess saved the prince? In these medieval Icelandic tales, she does. Collected and translated in the late 19th century, this volume gathers Norse folklore that inverts the familiar fairy tale formula: here, princesses and peasant maidens venture into dark forests, outwit witches and giants, and rescue the princes who have fallen under enchantment. The women in these stories do not wait to be saved. They wander through trials, master magical gifts, and return triumphantly. The familiar beats are all present, but the power dynamics have shifted. These are the stories Norse mothers and grandmothers told their children, preserving a tradition where feminine courage drives the narrative forward.
