Children & Young Adult Reading, Novels

Dick Nason lives in Roan's Court, a wretched corner of London where his ragman father drinks away what little they have and his mother struggles to keep the family together. The squalor is crushing, the temptations constant. Yet something good lives in the boy - a curiosity about beauty, a tenderness toward the flowers at Covent Garden Market, a core of decency that refuses to be drowned out by his surroundings. When Dick steals apples from a stall, he discovers that honesty isn't just a moral abstraction. It costs him something, and it earns him something too. John Walters, a kind shopkeeper who sees the boy's potential, becomes the unlikely guide who teaches Dick that a farthing honestly earned is worth more than a fortune stolen. The novel traces his struggle to choose his own path, to believe that a different life is possible even when every circumstance tells him otherwise. Written in the late 19th century, this is a Victorian moral tale that doesn't shy away from the real poverty and degradation that shaped working-class childhoods, yet finds something worth saving in a boy who dared to be better.
