Horton Genealogyor Chronicles of the Descendants of Barnabas Horton, of Southold, L. I., 1640.

A remarkable genealogical chronicle that traces one family's journey from 17th-century England to the founding of Long Island. Barnabas Horton arrives in Mousley, Leicestershire, then sails to New Haven before settling in Southold, where he builds what is claimed to be the first framed dwelling on eastern Long Island, a house that still stands today, over 350 years later. Written in 1876 by a descendant, this volume documents not merely names and dates but the founding of a community: Horton's service as magistrate and member of the General Court, his reputation as a man of deep piety and an advocate for civil and religious freedom. The book weaves together personal lineage with the broader tapestry of colonial New England, offering glimpses into early American governance, religious life, and the texture of daily existence on Long Island's North Fork. For anyone curious about the roots of American families, this is a window into how one English pioneer's decision to cross an ocean reverberated through centuries of descendants.
