Honour of the Gout

In this audacious 18th-century pamphlet, Philander Misaurus mounts an improbable defense of one of humanity's most agonizing afflictions: gout. Written in deliberately inflated, mock-heroic prose that parodies serious medical writing of the era, the author argues that gout is not a disease at all but rather a mark of distinction, a punishment for the unworthy, and perhaps even a blessing in disguise. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Misaurus skewers the countless charlatans and "mischievous cheats" who peddle false cures, exposing the vanity and greed behind the lucrative business of treating this painful condition. The satire cuts both ways: while mockingly praising gout's "honours," it simultaneously lampoons the medical quackery and social pretension of the period. The pamphlet provoked a response from surgeon John Marten, who published "The Dishonour of the Gout" in defence of the afflicted. This curious work endures for readers who delight in sharp wit, historical medical curiosities, and the endless human capacity for elegant absurdity.
