Holidays at the Grange; Or, a Week's Delight: Games and Stories for Parlor and Fireside

At the Grange, Christmas arrives not with a single day but with an entire week of carefully guarded traditions. Uncle John and Aunt Lucy open their home to a lively troop of young relatives, and the house fills with the particular electricity of children anticipating Kriss-Kinkle. The book captures something precious and now-vanished: the specific texture of Victorian family life, where games like Consequences become vehicles for comedy and connection, where every child has a role in the festivities, and where the cold December world outside exists only to make the fireside warmth more precious. Higgins writes with the tender attention of someone who understands that these moments matter precisely because they cannot last. The stories and games unfold through holiday rituals, the decorated tree, the gift exchanges, the parlor games that spark laughter among the young people, the quiet hours when the fire burns low. This is not a narrative with dramatic stakes in the modern sense, but something perhaps more valuable: a meticulous preservation of how a particular family chose to be happy together. For readers who find modern Christmas too rushed, the book offers evidence that simpler pleasures, properly savored, can be enough.
