History of the Zulu War

The Zulu War of 1879 was one of Britain's most shocking colonial encounters, a conflict that saw a small African kingdom momentarily shatter the myth of imperial invincibility. Alexander Wilmot, writing just months after the last shots were fired from his home in South Africa, provides an unparalleled account of the war's origins, battles, and aftermath. Beginning with the rise of King Chaka and the transformation of the Zulu nation into a formidable military power, Wilmot traces the collision between British imperial ambition and a warrior society that had never known defeat. The narrative moves through the notorious disaster at Isandlwana, where Zulu impis annihilated a British column, to the legendary defense at Rorke's Drift, and onward to the final battles of Kambula and Ulundi. Rich with eyewitness testimony from soldiers and settlers who lived through the conflict, this account captures both the brutality of warfare and the strange admiration the British couldn't help but feel for their formidable foes. This is history written while the smoke still hung in the air.
