History of the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry

This is no distant historian's account. R.C. Rankin rode with the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, and in 1881 he set down what he remembered. The result is an intimate, often harrowing portrait of cavalry life in the Civil War's bloodiest years: the brutal winter campaigns, the desperate skirmishes with Confederate raiders, the endless miles of dusty marching through Tennessee and Georgia. Rankin names the men who fell beside him, recalls the specific horses he rode, and recreates battles with the kind of detail only a participant could provide. This is not polished military analysis but memory rendered urgent and personal. For anyone curious about what it actually felt like to be a Union cavalryman swept up in the war's vast violence, Rankin's account offers something rare: the voice of a man who was there, writing while the smoke had barely cleared.
