History of the Scottish Expedition to Norway in 1612

In the winter of 1612, six hundred Scottish soldiers marched into Norway on a doomed mission to fight for Sweden against Denmark-Norway. They never reached their destination. What followed was catastrophic: capture, slaughter, and a desperate retreat through mountain passes that became frozen graves. The survivors who escaped the sword faced starvation and hypothermia in a landscape as merciless as the war itself. For centuries, their story existed only in fragments, distorted by folklore, amplified by legend, and buried beneath the romanticism of local lore. Then came Thomas Michell, a Victorian scholar who walked the very valleys where the Scots had perished and grew suspicious of the impossible tales he found in guidebooks. His archival research uncovered official documents that had languished unnoticed for centuries, allowing him to reconstruct what actually happened during that fatal expedition the Norwegians still call 'Skottetog.' The result is both a corrective and a elegy: a meticulous accounting of military disaster that also serves as a meditation on how history becomes myth, and what we lose when legend eclipses truth.
