History of the Rise of the Huguenots, Vol. 2

In 1562, France stood at the precipice of a catastrophe that would grip the nation for nearly four decades. The Edict of January offered a fragile hope: limited tolerance for Protestants in a kingdom where Catholic uniformity had long been enforced by law and sword. That hope lasted less than a year. This volume chronicles the collapse of peace and the eruption of the first French civil war, tracing how inadequate concessions, courtly intrigue, and escalating violence transformed religious difference into armed conflict. Baird, writing with the rigor of Victorian scholarship and access to sources now lost, reconstructs the pivotal moments: the desperate calculations of Huguenot leaders like Condé and Coligny, the ruthless positioning of the Guise family, and the spark at Vassy where Catholic troops slaughtered Protestant worshippers in a barn, igniting a powder keg that would explode into open warfare. This is not merely a chronicle of battles and treaties but an anatomy of how tolerance fails, how minorities become threats, and how faith becomes weaponized in the corridors of power. For readers seeking to understand the deep roots of religious persecution in Western history, or the mechanics by which peaceful coexistence unravels, Baird's meticulous account remains indispensable.
