History of the Pirates Who Infested the China Sea from 1807 to 1810

In the early nineteenth century, the China Sea descended into something approaching total chaos. Yüan's account, first published in Chinese in 1830, captures the three-year reign of terror when organized pirate fleets commanded by ruthless leaders held coastal villages hostage and brought maritime commerce to its knees. This is not romanticized adventure fiction. It is a contemporary record of real violence: the raiding parties, the burning settlements, the desperate negotiations between authorities and pirates who had grown too powerful to ignore. The text reveals the surprising sophistication of pirate organization, their codes and hierarchies, alongside the terror they inflicted on ordinary people who sometimes fought back with extraordinary courage. The volume concludes with Sir John Dalrymple Hay's 1849 account of his own encounters with Chinese piracy as a British naval commander, offering a foreign perspective on a problem the Qing dynasty struggled to contain. Together, these voices paint a vivid picture of a world where the line between pirate and power was often dangerously blurred.
