History of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia

Written in 1860, this is a window into how Americans understood their colonial origins on the eve of the Civil War. Charles Campbell documents the extraordinary saga of English exploration and settlement in Virginia: the doomed voyages of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, the mysterious disappearance of the Roanoke colony, and the desperate early years of Jamestown where survival meant navigating starvation, conflict with indigenous peoples, and political chaos. The author writes with 19th-century confidence about America’s providential destiny, framing Raleigh’s efforts as heroic even as he records the brutal realities of contact between settlers and native populations. This is neither dry chronicle nor romantic mythmaking but something more interesting: a Victorian intellectual’s earnest attempt to make sense of where his nation came from, complete with the assumptions and blind spots of his era. For readers interested in early American history or the history of historiography, it offers a fascinating glimpse into how colonial Virginia was remembered and constructed just before the nation itself fractured.
