History of Spanish Literature, Vol. 1 (of 3)

Before Wikipedia, before modern comparative literature, there was George Ticknor's monumental History of Spanish Literature. Published in 1849, this three-volume work was the first comprehensive history of Spanish literature written in English, and it remains a foundational achievement in the field. Ticknor did not write from secondhand sources: he traveled through Spain in the 1820s, consulted manuscripts in monastery libraries, and corresponded with Spanish scholars including Don José Antonio Conde. This first volume traces Spanish literature from its medieval origins through the early modern period, examining how the centuries-long struggle against Moorish invaders and the cultural collision between Christian and Islamic civilizations shaped a distinctly Spanish literary voice. Ticknor also documents the dark years of Ferdinand VII's reign, when political oppression silenced and exiled countless writers, their works often banned or burned. The result is not merely a catalog of texts but an argument about how a nation's literature grows from its history, its geography, and its political fate. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how Spanish literature became what it is, and why the Golden Age that follows remains one of the luminous peaks of Western civilization.
