History of Halifax City

Published in 1895, this Victorian-era history captures Halifax at the moment it had just crossed its first century and a half. Thomas B. Akins, writing with the benefit of archival access now lost to time, traces the city from its dramatic founding in 1749 when Governor Edward Cornwallis arrived to plant the British flag on Acadian soil. The narrative unfolds as strategic drama: the logistical nightmare of establishing a settlement surrounded by French enemies and contested territory, the careful calculations of military defense, and the tense dance with Indigenous nations whose lands these truly were. Akins writes from within the British imperial imagination, and his account bears the confident assumptions of late-Victorian historiography. This is not contemporary history rendered with nuance; it is history as the colonizers told it to themselves. For readers interested in how cities are born through force and will, or in the foundations of Canadian identity, this primary source offers an invaluable window into the colonial mind at work.
