History of Dogma, Volume 1

Adolf von Harnack's masterwork inaugurated the modern historical study of Christian doctrine. Writing in 1894, this German theologian asked a question that scandalized his contemporaries: how did the simple proclamation of Jesus become the elaborate theological system of the early church? The answer, traced from the New Testament through the great ecumenical councils, revolutionized how we understand faith itself. Harnack demonstrates that doctrine did not descend fully formed from heaven but emerged through centuries of cultural negotiation, philosophical wrestling, and institutional consolidation. His critical method treats theological statements as historical documents, asking not whether they are true but how they came to be. This volume established the framework that still shapes the academic study of religion: the recognition that what Christians believe was once contested, translated, and transformed. For anyone seeking to understand the intellectual architecture of Christianity, or to question how any tradition becomes orthodoxy, this remains an indispensable, debatable, and constantly relevant landmark.
