History of Atchison County, Kansas

Published in 1916, this is a loving portrait of one Kansas county as seen through the eyes of someone whose mother rode a prairie schooner into its earliest settlements. Sheffield Ingalls gathers sixty years of memory into chapters on geology, prehistoric peoples, Native American history, and the rush of white settlement that transformed the plains. What emerges is not dry chronology but a community telling its own story: the railroad men and schoolteachers, the farmers battling drought and grasshoppers, the institutions that gave shape to a rough frontier. Ingalls writes without much distance between himself and his material, which is precisely what gives the book its weight. This is history as the people who lived it would have told it, complete with the reverence and selective memory that implies. For readers drawn to the American grassroots, to the particular textures of places that never made national headlines, this county history offers something grander narratives cannot: the feeling of standing in a specific spot and knowing who stood there before.
