Historical Records of the Buffs, East Kent Regiment (3rd Foot): Formerly Designated the Holland Regiment and Prince George of Denmark's Regiment

Written in 1922 while the Great War's smoke still hung over Europe, this volume preserves the definitive record of one of Britain's oldest regiments during its darkest years. The Buffs, formed in 1572 and nicknamed for their distinctive buff-colored facings, marched through the first battles of 1914 straight through to the Armistice, enduring casualty rates that decimated generations of men from Kent and beyond. Moody draws on war diaries, personal accounts, and official records to reconstruct the regiment's movements through Ypres, the Somme, and the grinding trench warfare that defined industrial conflict. The account does not romanticize; it documents mobilization chaos, the horror of sustained infantry assaults, and the peculiar pride of soldiers who called themselves 'The Old Buffs.' This is military history at its most immediate: written by someone who lived through the war's end, before the rose-tinting of memory could soften the horror. For historians of WWI, researchers of British military tradition, or anyone tracing a family connection to the regiment, this remains an indispensable primary source, the voice of the regiment speaking for itself.
