Historical Record of the 71st Regiment Highland Light Infantry from Its Formation in 1777, Under the Title of the 73rd, or Mcleod's Highlanders, Up to the Year 1876

This is a remarkable survivor from the age of empire: a meticulous regimental history compiled in 1876, when the echoes of the regiment's battles still reverberated through living memory. The 71st Highland Light Infantry began in 1777 as the 73rd Regiment, or McLeod's Highlanders, raised amid the Highland clans to fight Britain's wars in the American Revolutionary War. What follows is nearly a century of crimson service across the globe: the heat of Indian campaigns, the smoke of European battlefields, and the forging of a regiment whose name became synonymous with Highland valor. Hildyard, writing with the authority of an officer who knew military history firsthand, constructs not merely a chronology of campaigns but a testament to the men who wore the tartan. This is primary source history at its most evocative, capturing the transformation of Highland clansmen into the professional soldiers who built and defended an empire. For historians of British military history, for those tracing Scottish genealogical threads, for anyone drawn to the romance of the Highland regiments, this record offers an intimate window into an era when individual regiments were tribes unto themselves, bound by shared blood and shared glory.
