Historic Court Memoirs of France

The French court at Versailles was a theater of power where survival required wit, ruthlessness, and an eye for the main chance. This collection gathers memoirists who actually lived inside that glittering maze - Marguerite de Valois, that formidable queen who navigated the Wars of Religion; Cardinal de Retz, the scheming churchman who wrote his own memoirs as a manual of political cunning; the Duchess d'Orléans, chronicling the decline of the grand siècle. These are not histories written from a distance but intimate, often unreliably self-serving accounts from people who made and unmade each other over dinner seating and whispered conversations. The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, the fronde, the poison scandals, the endless cabals - all here in voices that still carry the urgency of people fighting for their lives and legacies. For readers who want to hear history not as it was analyzed but as it was survived.
