Historia De La Decadencia De España

Antonio Cánovas del Castillo wrote this bold historical analysis as a young man, before he would become the architect of the Bourbon Restoration and twice serve as Spain's Prime Minister. In these pages, he mounts a passionate rebuttal to foreign historians who had long portrayed Spain's decline as inevitable moral failure. Instead, Cánovas traces the collapse of the Habsburg empire from Philip III to Charles II through concrete political and economic forces: the catastrophic depopulation triggered by the Americas' discovery, the chronic insolvency of the royal treasury, and a nation perpetually drained by military commitments inherited from the Reconquista. His approach, centering economic and social factors decades before such analysis became fashionable, marks this as a strikingly modern work of historiography. The book pulses with youthful intellectual urgency, yet also reveals the seeds of the conservative statesman who would later seek to restore Spain's dignity through constitutional monarchy. For readers interested in how the 19th century grappled with imperial decline, or in the mind of one of Spain's most complex political figures, this remains essential reading.
