Hindle Wakes
Hindle Wakes is a play written by Stanley Houghton in 1911, notable for its role in the Manchester School of realist dramatists. The story follows Alan Jeffcote and Fanny Hawthorn, who embark on a secret affair during a holiday in Llandudno, only for their relationship to be exposed following a tragic accident. The play premiered successfully at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester and later at the Aldwych Theatre in London, and has been adapted into film multiple times, most recently in 1976. Its title references both the wakes week holiday and a traditional Lancashire dish.
