Children & Young Adult Reading, Novels

A children's story that opens with devastating immediacy: two children, Jerusha and Horace Flint, are taken to an orphanage after their mother's death, their small hands clutching each other as the world they've known crumbles. But this is Hilda's tale too. She lives with her aunt Mrs. Ashley in a village near Baltimore, and her path will cross with the Flint orphans in ways that reveal the invisible threads connecting seemingly separate lives. The novel's most vivid scene finds Hilda alone in a carriage as a ferocious hail storm breaks, her pony terrified, until Mr. Norman Ashley, an artist and Mrs. Ashley's brother, emerges from the storm to rescue her. What follows is a story about what it means to belong, to lose, and to find family not always where you expect it. Written in the sentimental style of early 20th-century children's literature, it trades in certain conveniences (the kindly aunt, the respectable household) while still delivering genuine emotional weight in its opening chapters. The mascot of the title remains ambiguous from this excerpt, but the stakes are clear: these children must find their way in a world that has already asked too much of them.
