Henry Clay's Remarks in House and Senate

Henry Clay was the greatest orator of his generation, and these two speeches show why his words still echo through American political history. In 1837, Clay stood against President Andrew Jackson's attempt to erase a Senate censure from the record, arguing that such executive bullying of the legislature would destroy the Constitution's careful balance of power. Then in 1819, he turned his gaze to Florida and the Seminole War, questioning a conflict waged without proper authorization and fueled by questionable motives. These aren't dusty archival documents: they are urgent warnings about executive overreach, military adventurism, and the fragility of constitutional liberties. Clay writes with the passion of a man who believed the Republic could only survive if its institutions resisted the temptation of power. For anyone who cares about how American democracy actually works, and how it can fail, these remarks remain startlingly relevant.
