Helen Redeemed and Other Poems

Maurice Hewlett's 1913 poetry collection takes the legend of Helen of Troy and strips away the centuries of bardic embellishment to find the woman beneath the myth. These are not simple retellings but psychological excavations: poems that ask what it meant to be the most beautiful woman in the world, to ignite a war that killed thousands, to become a word rather than a person. Hewlett writes with classical restraint yet aching emotional precision, tracing Helen through the halls of Troy, the ships, the bedchambers, the moments between battles when a woman must live with the consequences of being desired. The title poem 'Helen Redeemed' offers no easy absolution but rather a fierce reckoning with beauty, passion, and the weight of choices that were never truly hers to make. Around these central figures orbit poems of war, longing, and the ancient Greeks' particular genius for dramatizing the collision between fate and free will. For readers who believe poetry should make the familiar strange and the ancient immediate, this collection rewards every turn of the page.
