Harper's Young People, 1882 Index

A portal to Victorian childhood, this 1882 index catalogs an entire year's worth of wonder for young readers. Harper & Brothers' illustrated weekly delivered exactly what its name promised: adventures like the cruise of the Canoe Club, puzzles that exercised young minds, and educational dispatches about animals, history, and music that felt more like treasure maps than lessons. Characters like Mr. Stubbs's Brother and Max Rander populated pages adorned with engravings and portraits, creating a world where entertainment and instruction wore the same cheerful disguise. This isn't just an index. It's a census of late 19th-century childhood imagination, documenting what Americans aged roughly eight to fourteen found fascinating on a weekly basis. For historians of children's literature, for anyone curious about how Victorians imagined childhood itself, this chronological catalog of stories, games, and illustrations maps a world where learning wore a smile and adventure waited in every issue.
