Harper's Round Table, June 16, 1896

This June 1896 issue of Harper's Round Table offers a vivid window into late Victorian youth culture, where adventure and moral instruction intertwined on every page. The issue opens with Molly Elliot Seawell's "A Virginia Cavalier," a charming historical narrative that places young George Washington in the Virginia wilderness of 1746, demonstrating his skills as a woodsman while subtly building toward the destiny that awaits him. Alongside this, readers find the heartwarming story of Rick Dale, whose act of kindness toward Hans Altman sets in motion a journey of recovery and acceptance that would have resonated with the periodical's youthful readership. The issue also ventures into the contemporary world of interscholastic athletics, documenting school team achievements with the enthusiasm the era reserved for emerging sports culture, alongside curious collectibles like unused Wurtemberg stamps. What emerges is a portrait of 1890s American childhood: one filled with historical reverence, moral earnestness, and the belief that small acts of character could shape futures.
