Harper's Round Table, February 2, 1897

The February 1897 issue of Harper's Round Table arrives at the height of American periodical culture, offering young readers a window into a world of adventure, moral imagination, and practical wisdom. At its heart sits Molly Elliot Seawell's "Crying Tommy," a story that dares to examine a boy's emotional life within the demanding world of naval training, tracing the complex territory between childhood vulnerability and the expectations of emerging manhood. Around this central narrative, the issue gathers fiction, scientific articles, historical sketches, and practical counsel, reflecting the eclectic intellectual diet that shaped late Victorian young Americans. Puzzles and riddles provide lighter moments, while poetry and humor round out an issue that treats its young readership as capable of genuine engagement with ideas. This is period journalism as cultural artifact, revealing what turn-of-the-century families considered essential knowledge and virtue. For readers drawn to historical magazines, nostalgic adventures, or the particular anxieties and aspirations of Victorian youth, this issue captures a specific moment in American publishing when periodicals served as primary gateways to the wider world.
