Poetry

Harlem Shadows is Claude McKay's landmark collection, published in 1922 when the poet was just twenty-three years old. These are poems written in fury and tenderness, by a Jamaican-born Black man who refused to look away from the ugliness of American racism or the beauty of Black joy. McKay captures Harlem in its raw reality: the rent parties and the loneliness, the love affairs and the constant low-grade violence of being Black in a city that tolerates you at best. But make no mistake: this is not lamentation. There is defiance here, especially in 'If We Must Die,' the immortal poem that helped define a generation's refusal to accept degradation quietly. McKay writes with formal precision and passionate abandon, moving from sonnets to free verse with equal mastery. Max Eastman's introduction situates McKay as the authentic voice of a new Black consciousness emerging from the shadows of American neglect. Nearly a century later, these poems still pulse with urgency. They are for anyone who wants to understand what it meant to be Black in America in 1922 and how little some things have changed.
